What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity describes the natural variations in how people think, learn, and process information.
In Australia, around 1 in 7 people are neurodivergent, which includes those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Dyslexia, Dyspraxia or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Let's Face This Together

ADHD is among the more widely recognised forms of neurodiversity, affecting about 1 in 20 Australians, and can arise from neurodevelopmental pathways. Interestingly, ADHD is often thought of as a neurodevelopmental difference, but it can also develop in response to life experiences such as trauma, adversity, or other environmental factors.

While these differences can bring creativity, energy, and fresh perspectives, they may also come with challenges in focus, organisation, emotional regulation, or social connection. Sometimes, daily life can feel overwhelming—not because something is “wrong,” but because existing systems and expectations are not always built with neurodiversity in mind. The encouraging news is that with the proper support, tools, and strategies, people with ADHD and other forms of neurodiversity can thrive and harness their strengths and unlock their potential.

At NeuroNavigators, we believe neurodiversity is not a deficit to be “fixed” but a difference to be understood, supported, and celebrated.

At NeuroNavigators, you’ll work with qualified professionals such as clinical psychologists and registered counsellors, who combine their years of study, professional expertise, and lived experience to support neurodivergent individuals. We provide guidance and care for all forms of neurodiversity, including learning differences and other co-occurring challenges such as stress, burnout, low confidence and self-esteem difficulties.

Just like with other areas of mental health, therapy approaches can sound too technical or confusing. Some people seek a specific method, while others simply want reassurance that their care will be practical, respectful, and effective. We value transparency, and believe you deserve to know what to expect.

With that in mind, our psychologists and counsellors draw on a wide range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

  • Schema Therapy

  • Mindfulness-Based Therapies

  • Coaching for Executive Functioning Skills

  • Compassion-Focused Therapy

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)

  • Strengths-based and neurodiversity-affirming approaches
